THE CHALLENGE
For my friend René Delmotte and me, news of this historic discovery sparked the possibility of an exciting new expedition.
René and I have planned, organized and led annual expeditions into the jungles and wilderness of South America since 1989, in search of new information about ancient civilizations, little known Indian tribes, myths and lost explorers.
In 1996, while exploring the Amazon jungle in the region where English explorer Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett disappeared mysteriously in 1925, René and I and 10 others from our group were kidnapped and held hostage by the same Indian tribe that may have executed Fawcett and his two companions.
The ordeal,which made newspapers around the world, ended with negotiations by René and me for the release of our companions in exchange for their boats, motors, radios, generators and camping equipment – a US$30,000 ransom.
This and a dozen other perilous expeditions led by the two of us have earned us the title in the media of Brazil’s Executive Explorers.Expeditions are our hobby.
In June 2004, when René and I began researching an expedition to reach the source of the Amazon, few people had ever in vehicles. This would become our challenge: to be the first expedition to reach the newly discovered source of the mighty Amazon River using off-road vehicles. [Leia +]
